We took the train from Oslo to Bergen. The weather was sunny when we started, but soon became overcast. Still the scenery was beautiful.
We stayed in Bergen a half mile from the scenic and picturesque part of Bergen - Bryggen. We walked to Bryggen many times, each time passing the statue shown in Photo 1. The statue is located on the street of Photo 2.
Some flower venders are located at the entrace to Bryggen, plus a very impressive fish market.
These photos show Bryggen from across the harbor. Photos 1 & 2 were taken on our second day in Bergen when the weather was perfect, as contrasted with the first day (Photo 3) when there was a heavy overcast. Perfect days are rare in rainny Bergen, so we really lucked out.
These photos show the quaintest buildings in Bryggen. When I picture Bryggen in my mind, this is what I remember. The architecture dates back perhaps 400 years, but the actual buildings are less than 200 years old. The previous wooden structures were burned in a massive fire. The narrow alleys between the wooden buildings makes them fire prone.
Photos 1 & 2 show the transition to from the old Bryggen to the newer Bergen. In the center of Bergen there is a large man-made pond, with a fountain in the middle.
There is a funicular called Floibanen near the center of Bergen. This took us up 1000 feet above the city and gave us a great view. Notice the pond in the center of Bergen with its fountain.
Bryggen is not the only old part of Bergen, there is another less visited old area with its quaint houses.
Bergen even has photogenic manhole covers, plus, of course, store windows trying to lure tourists in.
