ARC de TRIOMPHE

Going in a northwest direction from the Place de Concorde brings you to the Arc de Triomphe. But the French don't usually use that name on a map - look for the Etoile (the star), so named because of the many streets that lead away from this square (Place Charles De Gaulle).

Beneath the Arc is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and eternal flame commemorating the dead of the two world wars. Inside the Arc there is a small museum documenting its history and construction. From the roof of the Arc there are spectacular views of Paris. Looking eastwards, down the Champs Elysées, toward the Louvre, there is the Place de la Concorde, the Tuileries Gardens, and the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel. In the opposite direction - westwards - in the distance is its larger and newer cousin, La Grande Arche de la Défense

The first photo is of Champs Elysees, which originates at Place Charles De Gaulle. From the top of the Arc de Triomphe, there is a great view with streets radiating in all directions, and the street in photo 2 is Champs Elysees.
