The EiffelTower was built for the International Exhibition of Paris of 1889 commemorating the centenary of the French Revolution. The Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII of England, opened the tower. Of the 700 proposals submitted in a design competition, Gustave Eiffel's was unanimously chosen.
The EiffelTower can be seen from most of Paris, and discerning where it is can help you figure out where you are. Here are some photos of Eiffel from various parts of Paris. Photo 1 is from across the Seine. Photo 2 from Palais de Chaillot, directly across the Seine. Photos 3 and 4 were taken when I approached the tower via a different route. Photo 3 is from the Ecole Militaire and Photo 4 from the Champ de Mars. And the last photo was taken at sunset, from the base of the EiffelTower.
I walked up the EiffelTower, so you have to see my pictures!
