Order Passeriformes    Family Turdidae

Thrushes are plump, soft-plumaged, small to medium-sized birds, inhabiting wooded areas, and often feed on the ground or eat small fruit. Most species are gray or brown in color, often with speckled underparts. Even if the adults do not have these speckles, the juveniles often will. They are insectivorous, but most species also eat worms, snails, and fruit. Thrushes build cup-shaped nests, sometimes lining them with mud. They lay two to five speckled eggs, sometimes laying two or more clutches per year. Both parents help in raising the young. The songs of some species are considered to be among the most beautiful in the avian world.

The True Thrushes


Many of the "true thrushes" have songs that are very pleasing to humans. A good example is the common blackbird that is occurs naturally in Europe, Asia, Africa and has been intrioduced into Australia and New Zealand. Another popular true thrush is the American Robin, which is unrelated to the European Robin which is not even a thrush. The true thrushes are medium sized brids.


Genus Turdus

The male Common Blackbird has black plumage; yellow eye-ring, bill. Female has dark brown plumage; some mottling on breast; faint yellow eye-ring; yellow bill. Blackbirds are related to song thrushes (Turdus philomelos) and also have a wonderful song.
Similar to: Indian Blackbird. Indian Blackbird has longer and broader eye-rings than Common Blackbird.
Similar to: Tibetan Blackbird. Common Blackbird has yellow eye-ring; Tibetan Blackbird does not.

The male Tibetan Blackbird has black plumage; yellow bill. Female has dark brown plumage; yellow bill.

The Fieldfare has plain brown upperparts; darker wings, tail; heavily spotted breast, flanks; reddish wash to breast; rest of underparts are white.

The Ring Ouzel has mainly black plumage; white feather edging visible on underparts. Male has white cresent on breast. Female similar and duller. Juvenile brown and may lack white crescent. It is the mountain equivalent of the closedly related Common Blackbird.

The Abyssinian Thrush was once consider a subspecies of the Olive Thrush. They can be differentiated by location as their ranges do not overlap.
Simiar to: African Thrush. Abyssinian Thrush has orange bill; African Thrush has yellow bill. Abyssinian Thrush has brighter underparts.
Similar to: Kurrichane Thrush. Kurrichane Thrush has dark malar stripe; Abyssinian Thrush does not.
