THRAUPIDAE - the Tanager Family

FINCHes and Allies

The Thraupidae are a family of passerine birds found in the Americas. About 60% of tanagers live in South America, and 30% of these species live in the Andes. Most species are endemic to a relatively small area. In addition to "tanagers", dacnis, finches, flowerpiercers, honeycreepers, seedeaters, and many other diversely named species are included in Thraupidae. The tangara genus includes some of the most spectacularly colored THE WORLD BIRDS.

Tanagers are omnivorous, and their diets vary from genus to genus. They have been seen eating fruits, seeds, nectar, flower parts, and insects. Many pick insects off branches. Other species look for insects on the undersides of leaves. Yet others wait on branches until they see a flying insect and catch it in the air.

This page contains finch-like memeber of the tanager family. Some of these species were formally in the sparrow family Emberizidae.

Genus Camarhynchus
These finches are all native to the Galapagos Islands.

The Gray-cheeked Grass-Finch has olive-brown upperparts with black streaks; pale and relatively unmarked lowerparts; yellowish-orange bill with blacking culmen. It is found in Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Its natural habitats are temperate grassland and swamps.
Similar to: Wedge-tailed Grass-Finch. The Gray-cheeked Grassfinch generally exhibits greater contrast than Wedge-tailed Grass-Finch.

Finch, Wedge-tailed Grass- Emberizoides herbicola  Found: Central and South America
The Wedge-tailed Grass-Finch has olive-brown upperparts with black streaks; pale and relatively unmarked lowerparts; yellowish-orange bill with blacking culmen. Its major range is in southeastern South America in southern Brazil, Bolivia, eastern Paraguay, and extreme northeast Argentina.
Similar to: Gray-cheeked Grass-Finch. The Gray-cheeked Grassfinch generally exhibits greater contrast than Wedge-tailed Grass-Finch.

Genus Geospiza
Found : Galapagos Islands of Ecuador
These species are referred to as the "ground finch" group of Darwin's finches. Within the ground finches those that are slightly longer billed are called cactus-finches, although the division may be false. The males have mainly black plumage and females have mainly brown plumage.

The bird measures 12.5 cm (4.9 in) in length—which falls between the lengths of the Small and Large Ground Finches. The bill of this species is quite variable in size, though the length of the upper mandible is always greater than the depth of the bill at its base.
