All the yellowthroats have similar plumage, with yellow-green upperparts, yellow breast, and a mainly black bill. The adult male has a black facemask of variable extent, usually bordered above with a grey band. The female is similar, but lacks the black mask, and may be duller in plumage. The breeding habitat of these warblers is typically marshes and other wet areas with dense low vegetation.

Genus Myioborus
The name whitestart refers to the white outer tail feathers which are a prominent feature of the members of this genus (“start” is an archaic word for “tail”). They are sometimes named as “redstarts”, but other unrelated species use this name also. The whitestarts are centered in northern South America with some being found in Central America (even into USA) and others as far south as northwestern Argenina. They prefer wooded areas.
