A vernal pool has water in the spring, but usually dries up during the summer. It provides a birthplace to polywog-like critters. A vernal pool certainly isn't a plant, but they are important to the ecology and deserve a picture!

 


The large pine cone in the center is a sugar pine cone - the larges type of cone in the world. This was close to 10 inches in length. I found it at Heavenly Ski center in the Lake Tahoe area. After keeping the cone for thirty years I made a deal with it - I no longer had to keep it as long as I kept a picture.
