We
bought a 4+ acre parcel of land in Pittsfield NH because there was a possibility we would lose our house because of a dispute with Rick. We did not want to end up homeless in New Hampshire, so we bought the Pittsfield lot as insurance. The lot was beautiful: mostly field and on top of a hill with great views. It had an existing 24 x 32 foot garage
Dan and Dick raised the south-facing roof so the 2nd floor would have a full sized dormer. However we had problems addressing concerns of the Pittsfield building inspector who claimed the second floor would not be made livable space (even though he had issued us a building permit) because it was on a slab that had no frostwall. We even did remedial work specified by an engineer - dug aroung slab-edge, installed 2 foot deep concrete wall, with a styrafoam exterior.
We finally conceded that it that no approval would be coming for an appartment above that garage. Fortunately the lot had sufficient acreage and road frontage that it could be subdivided into an additional building lot. That added value to the property, which we were thus able to sell for a minimal loss.
On the road that leads to the Pittsfield propterty there is a camel and highland cattle.
Pittsfield is famous and proud of its yearly hot air balloon fest. The year we attended the fest the weather was too threatening to let the balloons laucnh.
