SUNDAY
Sunday morning some people went biking. First they rode through Sete (Photo 1) and then arrived at a beach. The people in the photo are: Sandy Cole, Maxine Scott, Allyn Bradford, Polly Tritschler, Jean Medrik, Barbara Richardson, Millie Clark, Joan Stafford, Dick Clark. They saw our boat the Chardonnay on a canal. Also seen along the canal were pink flamingoes. A monastery was visited as shown in the fourth photo. The last photo shows some monastery artifacts which were attached to the wall.
Those that did not bike Sunday morning went on a bus tour. The first stop was Mont St. Clair. The first three photos are views from there. The last photo shows some flowers on Mont St. Clair.
The next stop on the bus tour was the village of Marseillan. It was very pretty, with a small canal traversing the middle of its main street. Noilly Prat winery, located in Marseillan, is famous for its vermouth. The third photo shows casks of wine aging in the sun. The casks are kept wet by sprinkling them 6 times a day. After aging in the sun, the wine is further aged in larger casks that are kept inside.
During the Sunday afternoon cruise, wild horses were spotted (photos 2, 3). The last photo shows a low bridge that caused the people on the deck to duck.
The Sunday afternoon bike ride was close to the Mediteeranean for much of the time. Photo 1 shows Dick, TBD, and Sheryl. Photo 2 shows where we stopped for lunch. The last photo shows a beach where we took a break. Paulo, our bike guide went for a swim while the others drank and ate ice cream.
The bikers got to the town of Aigues Mortes before the cruisers, so the bikers had a chance to tour that fascinating place before dinner. Those who cruised the next morning also had a chance to tour Aigues Mortes before that cruise. Since Dick was a biker, the Aigues Mort pictures go here.
Aigues Mortes (still water) was originally a fortified seaport built by Louis IX as a departure point for the crusades. The town has remained virtually unchanged since the Middle Ages as a result of the coastline having receded some five kilometers. The last photo shows the Chardonnay which docked close to Aigues Mortes.
