FANTAILS

Order Passeriformes  Family Rhipiduridae

These fantails have long tails that are fan-shaped when spread in display. Most are aerial feeders that feed on insects. The bills of fantails are typical for aerial insect eating birds, being flat and triangular. Fantails originated in Australasia, but there are now many species in Indonesia and the Philippines. There are also species in southern China and on the Indian subcontinet.

The Rhipiduridae fantails are not related to the fantails of family Motacillidae.

Genus Lamprolia - 1 species

Silktail,_Taveuni   Lamprolia victoriae  Found: Fiji
The male Taveuni Silktail has mainly glossy black plumage; silky white patch on both rump and tail; black margin on tail; dark eyes.. Female similar but less glossy. The Silktail has been placed in various families. It is now thought to be the closest relative of the Pygmy Drongo.

Female has paler crown, ear-coverts and throat.
