River Walk has helped rejuvenate Wilmington while maintaining much of the old architecture.
Wilmington has no high-rises, which contributes to it having a special charm.

In colonial days, goods were shipped from Wilmington to Europe.
The ships returning from Europe used ballast rock to help stabilize the ship and dumped the rocks in the harbors.
Those ballast rocks were then utilized for building foundations.
