Fort Macon is at the northern end of Emerald Island, protecting Morehead City. The fort and its contingent of 400 soldiers were captured by the North during the Civil War. Via restoration it is now in excellent condition and provides an interesting visit. Plus it is free.

 

Morehead City

We stayed in Morehead City while spending two days visiting Topsail Beach and Emerald Island in October, 2005. Morehead City has a nice waterfront, and does its northern neighber Beaufort.
