Obituary supposedly available at

but is was not!

I went to Carnegie Institute of Technology, but that didn’t work out so I joined the U S Army (1961-1965), learned Russian & worked as a translator in Germany. My wife (44 years married) & I graduated together from Berkeley in 1969 with degrees in Social Welfare. In the early 70’s, I was a photographer in the Bay area of California. After that, I worked in the Post Office to pay off student loans. In 1974, we moved to Maine & built (with our own hands, from scratch) our house & gardens. Building was so satisfying that I worked for five years as a builder. I worked as a counselor with troubled teens for several years & for several more years again in the Post Office. We adopted our son in 1977. Late in the 1980’s, I went back to school to become a teacher. Since then, I have worked as an elementary school special education teacher in Maine & in Florida. Now, I have retired & enjoy remodeling our American Craftsman bungalow & continuing with photography.

I did not graduate with the class but remember many members fondly after being with them from kindergarten through the ninth grade. With the encouragement of the ninth-grade Latin teacher, Miss Helen Carlson, I joined several other classmates like Bob Cecill, Dan Sheehy, Allen Fly, Bob Leadbitter, Peter Beck, and Peter Grillo, who had transferred to Philips Academy, where I was able to study both Latin and Greek. By coincidence, my cousin Dick Daniels and I ended up going to Brown and roomed together sophomore year. I majored in Classics, went on to Princeton for my Ph.D, and married my college sweetheart. After teaching Greek and Latin for two years at Columbia, I taught ancient history and classical languages at the University of Connecticut, where I continued to teach until 2014 after formally retiring in 1997. After two children and 10 years my first wife and I divorced. My second wife and I were married for 20 years until radically different career paths led us to part. Eight years later, I reconnected with a former teaching assistant and fellow historian and have been happily married ever since. Part of our success is the result of living side by side in s duplex that I designed and built with interconnecting doors. My daughter and son have given me five grandchildren, four boys and a girl.
